In September 2025, eight departments, including the Ministry of Commerce, jointly issued the "Guiding Opinions on Vigorously Developing Digital Consumption and Creating a Better Life in the Digital Age," which included consumer-grade 3D printers in the category of digital product consumption. This officially placed 3D printers among smart home and wearable devices, making them a popular consumer electronics product. A reporter's investigation found that 3D printers have already entered consumers' daily lives, becoming a new type of "home appliance" that combines creativity and practicality.

Rapid Market Development

The reporter observed that, in addition to some professional 3D printer manufacturers launching home-use products, some home appliance brands have also entered the market.

A 3D printing experience store owner told the reporter that consumers can experience the entire process from modeling to printing for a few dozen yuan and can also take home a custom-made small ornament; some enthusiasts who like to build their own mechs will customize non-standard small parts at the store; entrepreneurs can save on mold-making costs by printing creative products at the store. A friend of his owns a cake shop also installed a 3D printer in the shop, mainly for printing custom fondant molds. A representative from the 3D printer department of a home appliance brand told reporters, "The booming domestic trendy toy economy has accelerated the development of the consumer-grade 3D printing market. Some consumers use 3D printers to print their own designed toy models, gaining emotional value at a low cost." As the technology matures, the ease of use and practicality of products are rapidly improving, and consumers are shifting from curious experimentation to long-term use.

JD.com data shows that since the beginning of this year, sales of 3D printers and related accessories and consumables have increased by over 100% year-on-year, with those born in the 1980s and 1990s being the main consumer group. Over 60% of respondents have been continuously paying attention to 3D printing products and services in the past two years; 65% of respondents felt that more people around them were involved in 3D printing; and over 30% said, "Several people around me are involved, and I often see them showing off their creations and discussing how to use them." More importantly, the potential market demand is also strong, with over 70% of respondents expressing interest in 3D printing products.

According to the "2026 China 3D Printing Industry Market In-Depth Analysis Report" released by Huajing Industry Research Institute, the market size of China's 3D printing industry was approximately 45.7 billion yuan in 2025. Meanwhile, the consumer-grade 3D printing market is showing a sustained and rapid growth trend.

Lower Barrier to Entry

Once upon a time, 3D printers were considered cutting-edge technology in laboratories, with equipment costing tens of thousands of yuan prohibiting ordinary consumers. Now, with the maturity of the industry chain and the implementation of large-scale mass production, the price of consumer-grade 3D printers has dropped significantly, officially entering an era of affordability.

On e-commerce platforms, reporters found that, supported by national subsidy policies, the prices of mainstream consumer-grade 3D printers have dropped significantly. Some entry-level models can be purchased for as low as 2,000 yuan, and the prices of some popular models from certain brands have continued to decline to the price range of mid-to-high-end smartphones.

JD.com data shows that the current market has formed a clear price stratification: entry-level models under 2,000 yuan are suitable for the general public to try out 3D printers; advanced models priced between 3,000 and 5,000 yuan offer comprehensive functions and stable performance, dominating the market; and high-end models priced over 10,000 yuan target enthusiasts and light entrepreneurs. Among these, entry-level models priced around 1,000 yuan can already meet most of the creative needs of home users, becoming the core driving force for category growth. In 2025, the transaction volume of 3D printers on the JD.com platform increased by over 120% year-on-year, doubling for two consecutive years, with a significant increase in the proportion of home users.

It is understood that while the overall purchase cost of the printer has decreased, the price of consumables is also gradually declining. Currently, the average price of mainstream consumables such as PLA and PETG has dropped to around 50 yuan/kg. A reporter saw on an e-commerce platform that PLA SILK four-color gradient filament was priced at only 75 yuan. Based on this calculation, the consumable cost for printing a mobile phone holder is around 3 yuan. Ordinary families can also use 3D printers as everyday creative tools to print their favorite small items.

Besides lower hardware prices, the booming 3D model community has further reduced the barrier to entry. On platforms like MakerWorld, a vast library of creative models is available for free or at extremely low cost, allowing consumers to directly transform their ideas into physical objects without needing professional modeling skills. From special New Year's gifts and children's toys to small household items, ordinary families can easily experience the joy of creation with affordable models.

A high school student in Beijing told a reporter, "I frequently use the MakerWorld platform. Its 3D model library covers a wide range of categories, including art, education, fashion, hobbies and DIY, home use, miniature models, and props for role-playing. These DIY creations uploaded by users have greatly expanded the application boundaries of 3D printers in different scenarios. Now, the gifts I give to my classmates are all printed using a 3D printer."

Accelerated Technological Iteration

The booming model community has solved the problem of having usable models, while the integration of AI technology has made model design even simpler. The flourishing online model community and the deep integration of AI technology have fundamentally eliminated the design barrier, allowing consumers to transform their ideas into real products at almost zero cost.

A marketing manager for a 3D printer brand told reporters that by 2025, their model platform will be fully integrated with Tencent's Hunyuan 3D model generation platform. Hunyuan 3D models can achieve high-precision modeling down to 0.1 millimeters. When handling complex mechanical parts, it can precisely balance the technical bottleneck of sharp edges and smooth surfaces, significantly improving the texture of the printed product. This means that consumers can quickly generate high-quality 3D models without needing to master professional modeling software. The entire creative process, from finding models to creating them, has been completely streamlined.

With technological advancements, mainstream 3D printer brands now offer out-of-the-box functionality. Automatic leveling by sensors and algorithms, one-click slicing, and preset parameters simplify operation, eliminating the need for consumers to struggle with complex settings.

It is understood that, taking mainstream FDM (Fused Deposition Modeling) technology as an example, before 2015, most models had a stable printing speed of less than 150 millimeters per second, often taking several hours to print a complex model. After years of iteration, entry-level 3D printers now achieve speeds of 200-300 mm/s, while mainstream flagship models reach 400-500 mm/s. Models that previously took hours to print can now be completed in tens of minutes.

Meanwhile, printing precision is also constantly evolving. Early FDM printers required manual leveling, which was tedious, time-consuming, and prone to errors; LCD (liquid crystal display) printers needed to be vertically raised after each curing cycle, and even slight wobbling could lead to failure. Today, FDM printers feature fully automatic leveling, significantly reducing stringing and resulting in smoother, more precise finished products. LCD printers now come standard with dual linear guides, greatly improving stability, and the surface finish of finished products meets the high-precision requirements of projects such as figurines and cultural and creative products. The widespread adoption of multi-color and multi-nozzle solutions further enhances the efficiency of personalized creation while maintaining precision.

With the continuously lowering barriers to entry, technological breakthroughs, and an increasing variety of uses, 3D printers, like washing machines and microwave ovens, are becoming standard equipment in more and more households, allowing everyone to unlock the joy of creation.
